Coffee-Anise Stars

Everyday Dorie page 176.

Nothing says holiday baking more than a cut-out cookie. I rummaged through my stash of cookie cutters and found not only a star but a moon too. These are a plan-ahead cookie as the dough needs to chill at least one hour in the freezer or 3 hours in the refrigerator. I made my dough a day in advance. The only ingredient I needed to buy was the spelt flour. I took Dorie’s advice and used my spice grinder to make the ground star anise which made the house smell wonderful. I managed to roll, cut and bake with no issues. My cookie cutters were bigger than 2 inches so I got about half the recipe called for. I did a rush job on the frosting and it shows, mine are not nearly as polished as Dorie’s. We actually preferred the naked cookies to the iced ones. These were a nice spiced cookie that everyone enjoyed. To see what others thought head over to Tuesdays with Dorie.
