Pasta with Cabbage, Winter Squash and Walnuts

My first recipe with Cook the Book Fridays! I was looking forward to another interesting recipe from Dorie, pasta is a dinner we turn to often in our house. I chose acorn squash as my winter selection, linguine as my pasta and substituted pecans for walnuts. This was a fairly easy recipe, Dorie’s instructions are always detailed, but this was a little more involved for a week night meal than I had anticipated. My son hated it, he tried the squash but then picked it all out. He completed his meal so kudos to him for that. My husband loved it which I was thankful for as he is not a squash lover. I enjoyed it but it is not a new favorite. I think the verdict is still out on whether we will make it again.

I plan on doing all the recipes that have been done so far in the group. I have printed the list and I am off and running. Up first is this easy miso-glazed salmon. I am flush with a new container of miso from making Puffed Grain Miso Cookies from Dorie’s Cookies so this was the logical next recipe. This was so easy a paste of miso, honey, lemon juice and soy sauce. Salmon is our favorite fish and we all liked it, or at least my son didn’t complain, ah teenagers. This one will definitely be a repeat in our house. I am happy to be cooking with you all again and look forward to all the make-ups I can do to catch up. Happy Friday!

  1. I’m definitely finding these recipes a little more involved than I would expect for “everyday” weeknight meals… That said, they are delicious! Sorry the pasta wasn’t a hit – enjoy the catchup!

    Diane, I am so glad you are cooking with us. You’ll like cooking from this book. With an exception or two, I (and most of the group, I think) have liked these recipes. This was not a favorite but the pasta dish two weeks ago was delicious. Loved the salmon. The Shrimp Tacos are fantastic and will probably appeal to your son. Sometimes Dorie over-explains but she is trying to appeal to all levels of cooks. Bravo to her. I often cut corners and make the recipe simpler. Again, welcome.

  4. oh, so glad you’re doing this one, too! a lot of folks were meh on this pasta, but i must say that i really loved it.


  5. I am so glad you joined this cookbook as you are one of us! With very few exceptions, we have loved the recipes in this cookbook! There are a few I have re-made many times! Enjoy the make-up recipes…I am sure you will find a few favorites!

  7. This is not a favourite with my family. Will not be making this again as there are other favourite recipes which we love. I have not made the miso cod yet!
