Double-Chocolate Rhubarb Tart

This week on Tuesdays with Dorie we are making a tart, something always appreciated in our house. As soon as we picked this item to make I started scouring the grocery stores for rhubarb, an elusive item at times. I found some rhubarb at one of my local grocery stores, Pavilions, and snatched up 4 stocks. It was not a convenient time for me to make the tart so I made Rhubarb Upside-Down Brown Sugar Cake from Baking Chez Moi instead. I went back a week later to buy more rhubarb and of course the shelf was empty, I asked if they had any in the back and they said no they were waiting on delivery. Of course Murphy’s Law. I went to another grocery store near by a Gelson’s and thankfully they had some rhubarb, it was bundled up and artfully displayed around the produce department. I should have known that something was up when there was no price, when I went to pay it was $10.99/pound! Yikes I just spent $20 on rhubarb, I was hoping the tart was going to be a hit.

Since this tart had multiple steps I decided to break it up over two days. I made the chocolate tart dough and chocolate frangipane and stored it in the refrigerator overnight. All I had to do the next day was assemble and bake. I don’t think I have ever made Dorie’s chocolate tart dough but I decided to try it this time.

I used strawberry jam.
Getting the chocolate frangipane into the dish seemed the hardest part.
Topped with my beautiful rhubarb.
The chocolate frangipane did not quite cover my rhubarb.

The reviews were great. Like Dorie said chocolate and rhubarb really do go good together. We really like the chocolate tart dough too. I made a full batch of the frangipane and I sill have some rhubarb so I will be making this again. What a wonderful way to start the summer baking season. To see what others thought head over to Tuesdays with Dorie.

Looks delicious! I decided to forgo the search for rhubarb and make the chocolate banana version instead. Next year I’ll nab some rhubarb in season and try this one.

  3. This looks great – I did find rhubarb and will make it but I do not like the texture of it in pieces like this so I might have some lucky neighbours 😉 Yours is beautiful!

Yes, I thought spreading the frangipane was the hardest part too – it was thin on the ground and wanted to mix with the jam. Your tart looks great.

  6. We had similar experiences…I also found my rhubarb at Pavillions but it was my third store haha. And gosh, spreading that frangipane on the jam was the hardest part…in the end though it didn’t matter. Everyone loved it as it seemed your group did too! Hope you had a great time on your trip!

  7. don’t get me started about grocery stores not price labeling things– a big peeve of mine. that expensive rhubarb does look awfully pretty though.
