Dorie gave the option of making caramelized Rice Krispies (page 428) or plain Rice Krispies for the topping. I wanted to go for the gusto and make the caramelized topping. I managed not to burn them so I was off to a good start.
The directions were to bake the base for 22 minutes at 375 degrees. I only baked my for 20 minutes and I still think they were a little too dark and over baked. Next time I will bake even less.
I managed to cut my bars without any incident. Chocolate is one of my all time favorite ingredients and I like any dessert that includes chocolate. These bars were no exception. My husband and I thought they were more candy-like than cookie but still good. My son just wanted plain Rice Krispie Treats:)

Your bars look great! They don't remind me of Rice Krispie treats, but they look pretty delicious regardless!

The bars look lovely. I had some problems getting the rice crispies to spread to a single layer. I would like to make them again and cut down the baking time.

Your bars look great. I think I'd eat the caramelised rice crispies before they ever got to the bars.

I found them to be very \”toffee\” like—but I loved them! Glad you enjoyed, too!!

Yes — more candy than cookie. If you go in with that notion, then you won't be disappointed. Looks great.

I can't wait to make these! Thanks for the tip about the baking time – I will start checking after 15 minutes.

Your bars look wonderful. My oven isn't known for its browning ability so my base was more cookie-like, but candy-like sounds delicious!

Now that I see the caramelized rice crispy, I am going to make them. Yourbars look good, but I had to laugh at your remark about you son and Rice Krispietreats.

Yum! I agree, these definitely reminded me of toffee candy of some sort but still delicious.

I too like Rice Krispie treats, but this one was fun and tasty as well. My crust was ready at thirteen minutes – and it had a soft and chewy texture.
