Greetings from Redding California. I am here on vacation with a friend who recently moved and I decided to take my Tuesday with Dorie baking assignment with me. What better way to welcome someone to their new home than baking a cake.
I was unable to find Italian Plums and I am not a fan of plum cakes so I went with one of Dorie’s options and picked apples. I used one Fuji apple and cut thin slices. While baking I noticed that the cake rose in the middle but not the sides. I think the apple slices weighed down the cake. I will be interested to see how other cakes turned out.
We all enjoyed this one especially the honey topping. I think this is a make-again recipe and a great way to welcome the fall equinox.
So pretty! I’ll try with apples next!

Oh yours looks so fun and festive. I love how all the apples show, I was not so fortunate as only a few of my plums showed due to the batter rising around them. I love the look of the fruit showing. Nonetheless, mine tasted terrific so no complaints there. Yours is beautiful.

Our experiences were so similar! Good tasting but non rising haha. Glad you were able to get away…and how fun to bake there with your friend!
